WESTMINSTER, CO: Carlos Matos - 2015 UH Colorado Player of the Year

2015 was a banner year for Ultimate Hoops in the state of Colorado. Participation was at an all time high and the competition was better than ever. Colorado also sent two teams to the Ultimate Hoops National Tournament back in May, which was a first for the state. While many accolades were deserved in Colorado for the year, none were more deserving than Carlos Matos, the 2015 Ultimate Hoops Colorado Player of the Year.

Carlos Matos is the true definition of a pass-first point guard. He is a floor general who runs the offense flawlessly and is consistently finding the open man. While other players may put up bigger numbers than Carlos, the only stat that matters to him are wins. Whether he takes 15 shots or one shot, if his team gets the W, he's satisfied.

Carlos had one of the greatest years in Ultimate Hoops history, not just in the state of Colorado, but in the nation. Carlos and his squad, Hard Work, started off the year dominating every team in sight, and went undefeated in the winter season, capping their 11-0 season with a club championship.

Carlos returned to Hard Work in the spring of 2015 and returned to their dominating ways. Hard Work cruised through the regular season, finishing 11-0 and moved on to the Colorado State Playoffs. Hard Work was unable to bring home the state title, but I would argue that if they had a full squad, they would have rolled through the state playoffs. (Three of Hard Work's best players did not play in the state playoffs.)

The summer season brought a bit of a change to Ultimate Hoops Westminster, as Hard Work disbanded, Carlos put together a new squad, Splash City. Splash City consisted of a few of Hard Work's core players, and added a few fresh faces. With Carlos at the helm, the results were the same. Splash City went 8-1 in the Westminster regular season and, again, advanced to the expanded State Playoffs. In the State Playoffs, Splash City won all three of their games to capture the state crown. Splash City was able to win the Colorado State Championship in spite of losing one of their more talented players, who left for college in August.

A new season brought Carlos to a new team, as Matos joined up with IMPACT Basketball, a team that has hung multiple banners at the Westminster Life Time Fitness. It had been a full year since IMPACT had won a title, and adding Carlos to the mix was just what the team needed, as IMPACT rolled to an 11-0 championship season and winning every game by double digits.

For the year, Carlos and his teams went 44-2. And if you go back to his first season in Ultimate Hoops, Fall of 2014, his teams are 55-3. If that wasn't enough, Carlos is also a proud U.S. Veteran. To learn more about his service, please click here.
