MONTVALE, NJ: Get Ready For An Eye-Opening Season

Andrew Mendez and RUNt are back with some new faces

This spring campaign is gonna be a good one, boys and girls. Old School is back to haunt RUNt, and another upstart group of high schoolers is poised to rule the league and embarrass everyone. Here we go!

We are just one week in, but the prospects for this season already appear to trump our previous ones. In case you have been missing defense and grind-it-out ball, worry no more – two-time champion Old School has returned. Thanks to them, RUNt, your defending champs, are 0-1.

No need to push the panic button, as RUNt has re-tooled with even more talent. (Who in the pool had John Miller as their leading scorer in his first UHoops game?) Still, it’s always nice to see the team that just took the title in controversial fashion come up empty in the opener. Speaking of empty, check out Vinnie Graff’s stat line. Season’s greetings!

Now normally, we would already be predicting an Old School-RUNt title game. However, there’s a real unknown this time around that could turn this thing upside down. Say hello to the Lane Train of Pascack Hills High School.

Last spring, the Young Gelt Militia, a run-and-gun group of teenagers, showed up for a one-and-done season to wipe out the competition and claim their own banner. Where did they come from? Pascack Hills. The Lane Train looks to have even more balance than their predecessors. In Week One, they cruised to a win over the Bergen Tropics.

Speaking of cruising, dare we say it’s also time to look out for the Ferrall Ballerz? The Ballerz dismantled the already-drowning Super Splash Bros. They’ve got some new pieces as well, including Dan Gavagni, who swatted six shots in his debut. When one team has four guys - Dan Bronstein, Scott Ferrall, Damon Cameron and Gavagni - as the week's top four PPR performers, it's hard to ignore.

So, after an action-packed Week 1, we will simply leave you with this. Who said white men can’t jump? Throw it down, Thomas Harris. Take notice, guys. The Lane Train is coming.
