MONTVALE, NJ: Could A .500 Team Be The League’s Worst?

What's wrong with this picture? RUNt took down Ferrall Ballerz with four guys.

Even after a loss Wednesday night, the 2-2 Ferrall Ballerz sit behind only the Young Gelt Militia and Old School in the standings. But for anyone who took in their latest performance, it’s hard to think they pose much of a threat to anyone.

The Ballerz weren’t exactly balling Wednesday night. The 64-61 final doesn’t indicate reason for panic, but how they got there most certainly does. Credit must be given to a RUNt team that pulled out a win while playing 4 on 5 for most of the game. They showed incredible resolve and were not fazed by a double-digit lead that should have buried them. Just ask Jeremy Brown. His squad had plenty of easy looks at the basket when they should have been struggling to score against the Ballerz, not chipping away at a big deficit.

Therein lies the problem for Ferrall Ballerz. In back-to-back weeks, they blew big leads (though last week they somehow managed to escape). And who did they escape against? Team Randy, now at 0-4, who was not surprisingly routed last night by Old School. Randy hasn’t scored more than 42 points in a single game. They got 40 vs. the Ballerz.

So, what else have the Ballerz done? Well, they fought to the finish in Week 1 vs. Just the Tip. Now, JTT put a huge scare into the Young Gelt Militia, losing 43-42 on a questionable last-second no-call. However, let’s go back to Week 1. Just the Tip lost to the Ballerz because they were playing 4 on 5. Sound familiar?

Can the Ballerz get things going? Well, offensively, they don’t really have anyone who can create something by themselves. Four guys go for 8+ a game: 3-point/jump shooters in Rob Cohan, Brian Perez and Scott Ferrall, and Thomas Grycz, who gets most of his points off second-chance shots. The team ranks dead-last in free throw attempts, and it’s not close. Defensively, they give up the second-most points per game, and their opposition hasn’t exactly been the toughest thus far. Their next two games are against Old School and Young Gelt Militia. Good luck with that.

Ferrall can yell at the officials all he wants and Cohan can yell at his teammates every game. So far, it doesn’t seem to be accomplishing much. It will be fun to see who gets the final blame once the Ferrall Ballerz go home when the regular season ends in four more weeks.
