COMMERCE REC: Week 2 power rankings | Which team can stay undefeated?

Darius Statum drives past Jason Garrett for the two points

After two weeks of play, three teams are 2-0 and three teams are 0-2. Let’s take a look at the updated power rankings heading into week 3.

1) C4 (2-0) – The pre-season #1 team has done nothing to lose this spot. Convincing wins over the Sons of Basketball and Running Rebels have this team rolling into week 3 against the Weekend Warriors (0-2). Jeff Jayson and Brandon Nafso are both averaging 23 points per game while Joseph Kassis and Ara Kaypekian are cleaning up the glass at 7.5 rebound a night. Look for this team to move to 3-0 going up against the winless Weekend Warriors this week.

2) Hit Squad (2-0) – GM Devante Pennyman took offense to being the pre-season #6 ranked team. Adding impact players David Jackson and Andre Tillman, along with solid wins over the Running Rebels and Weekend Warriors, have this team back vying for a championship. Led by MVP candidate Jordan Jefferson (21.5 ppg, 74% FG), Hit Squad has 5 players averaging over 9.5 ppg heading into a matchup with the Sons of Basketball. The Hit Squad is a heavy favorite heading into this week 3 matchup. Look for them to stay unbeaten and tied atop the standings.

3) Shelby’s Finest (2-0) – A close win (77-76) against the winless Sons of Basketball drops Shelby’s Finest one spot in our power rankings (pre-season #2). The top guard duo in the league of Vaughn Gray (26.5 ppg) and McKinsey Golfin (20.5 ppg) leads this team into a week 3 matchup with the Running Rebels. We will find a lot more about this east side team in weeks 4 and 5 when they play the top 2 teams in the PR, C4 and Hit Squad.

4) Running Rebels (0-2) – This team is being placed at #4 with the anticipated return of MVP candidate Steven Reynolds. The Rebels have struggled through the first two weeks of the season, however they have played the leagues hardest schedule, matching up against the top 2 teams in our power rankings already. Facing the last of the unbeaten teams this week, GM Rashodd Ross along with star player Julius Barnett are hoping to see Steven Reynolds on the court in week 3 which could get the Rebels over the hump and to their first W.

5) Sons of Basketball (0-2) - Sons of Basketball seemed to find their rhythm last week taking Shelby’s Finest down to the wire in a one point loss. Sharpshooter’s Kane Poehlman and Darius Statum have combined for 15 3 pointers through 2 games to go along with the inside game of Joel Simpson who is averaging close to a triple-double (14.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 7.0 apg). With 5 players averaging double figures, SOB seems to be adjusting to playing a team game. A win against #2 rated Hit Squad would do wonders for this team’s confidence heading into games against the Running Rebels and Weekend Warriors in week 4 and week 5, respectively.

6) Weekend Warriors (0-2) – The most disappointing team of this young season, the Weekend Warriors are currently the averaging the lowest amount of points per game in the league at a dismal 63.5 ppg. Despite dynamic athletes surrounded by knock down shooters, the Warriors have struggled to find team chemistry through the first two weeks. In what looks like the most lopsided matchup of the week, the Warriors will take on #1 C4. However, let us all be reminded that the Warriors won 2 of 3 matchups with C4 last session. The Warriors have always provided a tough matchup for C4 GM Joseph Kassis due to big men that can knock down perimeter shots. This game will be closer than many think and may come down to the final minutes, like most of the matchups between these two teams in recent past.
