COMMERCE REC: Who will capture this prestigious award | Early look at our MVP nominees

Darryl Foster showing us why he deserves the MVP award

Every season new players step up and lead their respective teams to heights they had not previously reached. Each team has a “MVP,” yet some stick out above the rest. Let’s take a look at the early leaders for the Most Valuable Player in the Commerce Open division fall 2015.

1) Jeff Jayson (C4) – One of the all-time leading 3-pt shooters in Aquinas Saints history, Jayson has brought that skill (50% from 3 pt last session) over to Ultimate Hoops. However, Jeff is not just a shooter. He routinely guards the other team’s best player and is THE leader of the team. Jeff has been part of 8 championships with GM Joseph Kassis. He is coming off of a championship season where he averaged 25.6 ppg, 5.7 rpg, and shot 54% from the field.

2) Darryl Foster (Weekend Warriors) – The 6’4” wing has AVERAGED 40.5 ppg in the last two Commerce championship games. However, the reason he is at #2 is because the Weekend Warriors have lost both of those championship games. Foster is coming off of a session where he scored 24.6 ppg, brought down 5.3 rpg, and shot 54% from the field. Look for this dynamic scorer to carry his team deep into the playoffs once again.

3) Vaughn Gray (Shelby’s Finest) – Gray is the winner of the MVP award in multiple Shelby Twp sessions. This past session he scored a robust 27.2 ppg, grabbing 5.6 rpg, and dishing out 6.9 assists. The emotional leader of Shelby’s Finest, he led his team to a huge week 1 victory over the Weekend Warriors and looks to continue his assault on the rest of the west side teams over the course of the next 7 weeks.

4) Steven Reynolds (Runnin' Rebels) – The 6’5” 215 lb wing can score inside and out causing nightmare matchup problems for opposing defenders. In his 1st season with the Rebels he put up some gaudy #’s: 22.3 ppg, 8.9 rpg, and all while shooting 59% from the field. If the Rebels are going to return to championship form, it will most likely be on the shoulders of Reynolds.

5) Jordan Jefferson (Hit Squad) – One of the most underappreciated players in the league, the 6’6” Jefferson has averaged 17.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in his ultimate hoops career. With the departure of Desmond Sain, a heavier load will be on Jefferson’s shoulders. He is the dark horse candidate in this race. His talent is unparalleled, but will he step up and lead his team back to championship glory? We will find out in the coming weeks.
