MONTVALE, NJ: Transition baskets lead to easy wins

Running and gunning was the name of the game for the winners in the Week 7.

Everyone except the Ballerz showed up with just enough players to be able to tip off, but that didn’t stop the games from having a whole lot of fast paced action up and down the court.

In the first game, the Cowboys pushed the pace early and used the transition game to gain a quick 8-7 lead over the defending camps. But the Ballerz started to beat them at their own game with deep passes down the court off of Cowboys misses and turnovers to go on an 8-0 run and take the lead. Nick Garcia (22 points, 7 rebounds & 5 assists) and Joey Tortora (23 points, 9 rebounds & 4 assists) tried their best to keep it close, and the Cowboys even tied it at 17 later in the first half, but a well-balanced Ballerz attack kept pushing the ball on their way to a 12-point halftime lead.

The distance between the two just kept growing in the second half as the Ballerz continued to push the pace. They ended up winning by 22. The Ballerz were led offensively by Scott Ferrall, who shot 10 of 13 for 21 points and added 9 rebounds. The whole team contributed though, as Justin Leon added 18 points along with 8 rebounds and 7 assists and Brian Mistretta chipped in 13 off the bench. The defending champs improve to 6-0 on their quest to repeat as the kings of Montvale.

The second game saw both teams having barely enough players to get underway, but that didn’t slow down the action at all. Uncle Chubby’s got out to a quick start and led 8-4 early on. But the Comebacks lived up to their name and had it tied up at 11 within a couple of minutes.

Danny Readie (22 points, 8 rebounds & 4 assists) gave Uncle Chubby’s fits as they tried to stay in front of him and he often found Marselis Middleton (25 points & 9 rebounds), who extended the Comebacks lead to 32-20 on a jumper with 7 minutes left in the first half. The Comebacks kept making the most of Dahne Menzel’s 21 rebounds to get out in transition and extend their lead, and they closed the first half up by 22.

In the second half, Brian Cooke (17 points, 7 assists & 5 rebounds) and Chris Patrick (15 points) tried to get Uncle Chubby’s back into the game, but just couldn’t claw their way any closer, and lost, 80-57. The win pushes the Comebacks up to a game over .500 at 3-2 and a tie with the Bergen Tropics in the standings.

Before Wednesday's action, Ferrall caught up with Antoine Lash and Joey Tortora of the Cowboys and found out that, despite their disappointing season so far, they still have a bright outlook on the future.
