COMMERCE OPEN: Power Rankings | Who will get their first loss?
Bret Price suprised by the camera
After two weeks, we are left with three undefeated teams and three winless teams. DatAint Fair, C4, and Sons of Basketball all have started off 2-0, however, at least one of them will come away with a loss this week. C4 (2-0) and Sons of Basketball (2-0) meet in our game of the week at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 28.
1) DatAint Fair (2-0) – A solid 12-pt win over a talented Running Rebels squad in week 2 is enough to keep DatAint Fair with the #1 ranking. Vaughn Gray, Darryl Foster, and McKinsey Golfin all finished with 20+ pts, however, to win a second consecutive championship, they are going to need more contributions from the rest of their teammates.
2) C4 (2-0)–Despite missing sharp shooter Jeff Jayson for a second consecutive week, C4 reached the century mark again defeating “Squad” 100-81. PG Brandon Nafso was unstoppable in transition all night long, scoring 41 pts, while all 4 other players also contributed double digit scoring totals. C/F Joe Kassis controlled the paint for C4 on defense with 14 rebounds and also contributed 16pts.
3) Sons Of Basketball (2-0) – While Sons of Basketball may have moved to 2-0, they got some bad news in the form of an injury to GM Darius Statum. The severity of the injury is still not known to this point, but any injury to Statum will leave Sons of Basketball weakened severely in the back court.
4) Running Rebels (0-2) – An 0-2 start is not what any team is hoping for, but we saw a big improvement in week 2 from the Running Rebels, partly due to the additions of Steven Reynolds and Phillip Nelson to the lineup. Nelson and Reynolds combined for half of the Rebels points in their loss to DatAint Fair and will need more contributions from their teammates if they plan on being the 4th team to make the playoffs this session. A matchup with 5th ranked “Squad” will give a clearer picture to the who has the inside track to the 4th playoff spot.
5) Squad (0-2) – After opening a 15 pt lead on 2nd ranked C4, Squad was outscored by 34 pts the rest of the game, eventually falling 100-81. A team that is trying to find its chemistry offensively and defensively, Squad definitely has the talent and athleticism to win on any given night. They might want to consider not settling for the 3-ball so much as well after only shooting 26% from downtown on 31 attempts.
6) Rock City (0-2) – Rock City really struggled to score the ball against a solid defensive team in Sons of Basketball last week. The 53 points scored are a very low total for the high pace of action in UH Commerce games. Shooting only 39% from the field and 21% from downtown, RC is going to have to find some form of offensive cohesion if they are going to compete with the 5 teams ranked above them.
