WESTMINSTER, CO: Week 6 recap | Too close for comfort

What's so funny?

Week 6 was a wild one in Westminster. Four of the eight games were decided by less than ten points, with three of those games decided by a single bucket. Here's a look at the week that was.

The Bad Boys – 56 The Gladiators - 54

These two teams started week 6 off right with an intense 7:00 game. The Bad Boys, notorious for their aggressive and efficient style of play started off a little slower than normal coming off of last week’s loss. The Gladiators, a solid and experienced team were able to capitalize and earn an early lead. That lead however didn’t last long as the teams were neck and neck going into the second half. Leading scorer for The Gladiators, Parker Stephenson fouled out midway through the second half leaving The Gladiators with zero substitutions. Even with the loss of their leading scorer The Gladiators were able to stretch the game out into overtime against The Bad Boys. With what looked like a second overtime coming, a late foul at the end of the game gave The Bad Boys an opportunity to take the lead. Both free throws were missed but The Gladiators were unable to contain big man Reggie Jackson who snagged the offensive rebound off of the second missed free throw and laid it up for an easy two with only a few seconds left leaving the Bad Boys victorious and The Gladiators one box-out short of second overtime.

IMPACT Basketball - 74 White Iversons - 72

Another exciting 7:00 game this week was against two of the league’s most athletic teams. This season, the undefeated IMPACT, came close to experiencing their very first loss this week. The White Iversons, a team arguably made up entirely of pure athletes gave IMPACT a good run for their money. However the great physical play, tough defense, and a 29 point performance by Derek Elliot still did not prove to be enough for The White Iversons to take down IMPACT. IMPACT’s patience, team chemistry, and clear understanding of the game combined with their athleticism has made them the team to beat this season. They are a very well balanced team with 5 players scoring in double digits this game. Their ability to control the tempo at the very end of this game shows exactly why IMPACT remains undefeated.

The Kardashians - 92 Purple Cobras - 57

Looking for their first win of the season, the Purple Cobras fell short against The Kardashians. The Kardashians secured a double digit lead going into half-time and it only increased from there. The Purple Cobras did the very best they could even with the majority of their team missing, but were unable to contain The Kardashians from both the inside and the out. From aggressive takes straight to the basket, to impressive movement both in and outside of the key The Kardashians seemed to dictate the game and take whatever they wanted. Chris Morgan was a force from both inside and out, taking players both off of the dribble as well as pulling up for long range jumpers midway through transition, ultimately ending with 32 points; Just when The Purple Cobras thought they could stop Morgan’s hot hand Dylan Loucks started the fire again hitting seven of his twelve threes in the second half. The Purple Cobras however never gave up and showed great effort in their first game of the night.

Eat, Sleep, Ball, Repeat - 81 The Tropics - 45

A game that doesn’t need too much analysis, ESBR, a fast paced team that pushes in transition and plays well together as a team was too much for The Tropics. Killing The Tropics with offensive rebounds ESBR was able to capitalize on second chance opportunities and attacking the rim. The Tropics played at a slower pace and lacked aggressiveness towards the rim ending with only one trip to the free throw line the entire game. ESBR secured a 45-22 point lead at half time and never looked back.

FireSquad - 102 Havoc - 100

An even matchup took place at the very end of the night. Havoc and FireSquad went head to head but it was FireSquad who was ultimately able to come out on top. Havoc chipped away at a ten point lead held by FireSquad at the half and the teams were pretty evenly matched but it was FireSquad who was able to execute more successfully and win the battle of the boards that ultimately resulted in their victory over Havoc.

Purple Cobras - 82 The Tropics - 77

This final matchup at the end of the night brought together two teams who had both played and both lost earlier. Hungry for a win, both The Purple Cobras and The Tropics brought their best efforts at the end of the night going back and forth the entire first half leaving the score tied at half time. It was the Purple Cobras who were able to snag the win at the very end using their speed and aggressiveness to really attack The Tropics. The Tropics showed far more aggression towards the rim this time around compared to their earlier game but simply were not able to connect at the end as well as the Purple Cobras. The Purple Cobras picked up their first win of the season, they are now tied with The Tropics with a record of 1-6.
