MONTVALE, NJ: Ferrall Ballerz and Lane Train to Fight for the Title

The defense of Perry Mann, Mike McClendon and company will be much needed for the Ballerz to win it all

We are down to the final two. The Ballerz made it look easy against Old School and Lane Train got revenge over Just Ball. So…Who will be the last team standing?

Well, the predicted Ballerz-Just Ball title game isn’t happening, but it’s hardly a shock that Lane Train made it instead. To get to the semis, they steamrolled USDA Prime. We knew USDA would have to hit some outside shots to stay in it. With a 1-for-23 showing from three, it’s no surprise they had no chance.

At least Lane Train was tested somewhat by Just Ball. Even so, they basically led start to finish. Without easy buckets, Just Ball’s offense (or lack thereof) was exposed. Justin Michalek, Chris Brundage and Reed Johnson combined to go 13-for-40. To make matters worse, Lane Train was given way too many open looks. The final here could have been a lot worse.

The Ballerz, thanks to a first-round bye, did not have to play back-to-back games. They cruised against a cranky Old School squad who hung on against RUNt the night before. Old School scored in the 40s for a second consecutive night. This time, however, they came across a better-balanced offensive team.

Before the Ballerz advanced to their first championship game, Ferrall interviewed Dan Gavagni in what wound up becoming a mini pre-game pep rally.

The question is, will the Ballerz still be smiling after next week? They played Lane Train back in Week 4. The result? A 44-34 Ballerz win. Both teams were at full strength, meaning we might be able to expect a similar low-scoring fight this time around. In fact, not one person from either team scored in double-figures in that one.

As points may be at a premium, consider that the Ballerz lead the league in two important categories by a wide margin – field goal percentage (47%) and free throw attempts (18.6 per game).

On the other end of the floor, it’s the perimeter defense of the Ballerz that may put them over the top in this one. They made things very difficult for the kids the first time around, limiting the Lane Train to 2-12 from beyond the arc. Will Mr. Harris and company be able to find enough quality shots?

Here’s a crazy thought…The Ballerz will make it out of the spring season undefeated.

Prediction: Ferrall Ballerz 50, Lane Train 46
