MANSFIELD, TX: Heavy Hitters Take The Cake | Leonard's Top 5
Spring 2014 Champs, Heavy Hitters
On Tuesday we witnessed 2 great games, as The Vets squeezed by Lunch Ballers in a highly controversial win in OT. They then prepared to rally against top team Heavy Hitters in a back to back sequence, and boy did they get oh so close, but as the saying goes, "Close, but no cigar". Heavy Hitters overcame foul troubles and the sudden surge of The Vets, who played with high energy despite the fact that they had just played an overtime game, with maybe 15 minutes in between to prepare for the championship match. Final Score: 70-75.
It's been a great season, one of the best in my opinion here at Mansfield, and the competitiveness of the players this season was amazing. I have my top 5 guys for each position who (in my opinion) represent the top player for that position. Remember, this is the writer's opinion :-)
Point Guard: Adam Rowe
Now when I think of the PG position I think of someone who can handle the ball, pass the ball, facilitate, and if he's a strong PG he can score the ball as well, and play defense. But the key is leadership. Adam Rowe has pretty much been that PG. Though he's had to play the role of a scoring PG for most of the season, in Week 8 we saw just how exceptionally well he can pass the ball and how well he can see the floor, racking up 10 assists against The Agents. He's led Lunch Ballers to their best record (6-3) since their beginnings with his talent and energy, firing up his team at will it seems. Though he can be highly trigger happy at times, he shot 52% from downtown this season knocking down 33, and shot 57% from the field. That's ACCURATE. Teammate Vince Benn is close runner up, who has craftier ball handling skills and passes, but Adam excels in the shooting department.
Shooting Guard: Jacob Van
Jacob Van was made to play the SG position with his ability to streak down the floor and let the ball fly in an instant, and he has good reason to. He can knock down the three (42%), as well as knock down the mid-range jumper off of the dribble which is the best I've seen in the league, and he can catch and shoot from anywhere on the floor. It's look like a shooting drill, looking as if he eyes the spot where he wants to shoot before taking the shot. And who stops him? No one. His long arms and height, accompanied with some springs under those feet make it a bit hard to contest his shot they way you'd want to defend it. Speaking of defense, probably the best overall in the league. He had 14 steals which puts him at #1. MVP of this league, YES. Hoop Squad gunner Leonard Frank is a true threat at this position, knocking down an incredible 55-105 (52%) threes this season
Small Forward: Sam Bailey
He is one of the unsung heroes of the veteran squad. The game ALWAYS changed for the better when Sam got in the game, and though he took more of a laid back or "role player" position this season with The Vets, we've seen and got to see what he is capable of this season, and is one of the reasons behind that energy surge we saw in the playoffs. He plays great defense, he's precise and sturdy with his moves, and can warm up behind the arc. He averaged almost a double double again this season with just under 17 points and 8.2 rebounds a game, and shot 60% from the field for the entire season. Though not as big as Sam, Nathan Harris gives you a good SF feel, sticking to the wings and corners, and his height (6'2") with his ability to shoot the ball at random off the dribble proved to be effective, hitting 42% from long range over the course of the season. Close runner up.
Power Forward: Al Hurd
The guy is big. Not only is he big, he's solid, built like a lineman. He's scrappy in the paint, fights for every position to rebound, and is extremely hard to get around. Not only that, his hustle game is ferocious. The guy can get up the court for a big fella. He moves better than any big guy in the league, and even proved he can shoot the three ball. He is very unselfish, and still managed to put up 11.4 points and 7.7 rebounds a game for his team of scorers. He is the best at playing his role and position, not trying to do too much while at the same time not doing too little. Lunch Ballers' Laurence Daggett would be a close threat for this top spot with his powerful rebounding, impressive footwork down low on offense, and well as his ability to occasionally step outside the arc for the bomb.
Center: Donnie McDade
Combine height, strength and size with the word beastly and you get Donnie McDade. At 6'8" 240 lbs, it really isn't all that fair to any of his opponents. He gets to ANY position at will, and he managed to block 14 shots and grab 122 rebounds on the season, impressive. He was literally the center piece for The Vets, making it easy for them to run a sort of triangle type offense. What impressed me about him mainly though was his put-back skills. He was always in the right place at the right time to grab a missed shot off the rim and get it in its proper place. I would see the other team's frustration with him, and all you can do is shake your head and try your best to deal with him down both ends of the floor. He was the only true C in our league this season, and played it well.
