SCOTTSDALE, AZ: Summer 2015 All Scottsdale League | The Best of the Best
Dewayne Pettus (XOVER) has more than held his own in his 2nd Season and looks to help his team make another strong tournament push
The influx of talent has made Scottsdale the “it” league to be in. The debate that surrounds the selection of the players has been the toughest in years and there’s bound to be controversy. There are definitely more than just 10 players that deserve to be on the list, but these are the ones that have stood out to the committee.
Disclaimer: Stats play just one part in the discussion. We’ve also taken into account, the value each of these players has brought to their team. Everyone is entitled their opinions and no right answers truly exist really, but I think the subjectivity is what makes this such a fun topic - regardless of how much data we use to support the picks, we’ll always be subjected to scrutiny and criticism.
All Scottsdale 1st Team
• DeWayne Pettus ( 44.4 PRA, 29.9 PPR) - XOVER
DeWayne is one of the more underrated players in the leagues. He has a quiet demeanor and just goes about his business – but don’t get it twisted, he is one of the most competitive players we have. Any chance he gets, he can and will light you up without any remorse. He has a smooth all-around game; this lefty plays with a sense of calm yet his athleticism is second to none. While every team had to worry about stopping is partner in crime (Delonn), he has stepped up in this his second season at UHoops and his team has fed off the energy and leadership he has provided.
• Nick Tomsick (42.7 PRA, 19.4 PPR) – SPLASHBROTHERS
The name Nick Tomsick is pretty much synonymous with UHoops nowadays. He stepped on our courts about a year ago and has been a force to be reckoned with ever since. We all know he can score with the best of them (35.7 PPG) but what makes him great is his desire to win. Every year he fields a team that is loaded with talent and yet he still stands near the top as the leader. He will need to continue his scoring ways if he’s looking for get that elusive 2nd championship.
• Mike Bibby (25.2 PRA, 37.5 PPR) – 20 or BETTER
Mike Bibby is the biggest name we have and his game hasn’t disappointed. He’s a savvy veteran and anyone who has watched the games, knows what he brings to the table (25.2 PPG). He is the go to player for 20 or BETTER and when they need buckets, he’s a guarantee to be the one they kick it out to. He brings it every night and is looking to beat you down any chance he gets - you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who expects to win more than he does. Despite the “low” seeding going into the tournament, this team has found its groove and they find themselves arguably the favorites to win the ‘chip.
• Jay Burkes (21.0 PRA, 32.0 PPR) – SPLASHBROTHERS
Jay “Buster” Burkes is by far the biggest freak we have - no one his size should be able to do what he does on the court. He is without a doubt one of the best players in the league and he continues to impress game after game. Buster can dominate inside whenever he chooses to and once he gets low in the block, it’s a guaranteed highlight dunk, but the one thing that sets him apart from other bigs is his touch around the rim - the game looks to be too easy at times for him.
• Tyrone Jones (34.0 PRA, 24.7 PPR) – TWISTED STEEL WITH SEX APPEAL
Tyrone Jones was the undisputed leader of the team. He led his team with 21.3 PPG and 9.0 RPG. The offense went through TJ – as teams decided to double big man down low, he was adept at finding the open man (3.8 APG). His strength allows him to get great position on the block – he is one the hardest player to stop from going to the rim once he puts his head down. The team’s season has been a bit of disappointment, but part of me can’t help but to feel that they have the veteran leadership to go pretty far in the tournament and TJ will be a big reason why.
All Scottsdale 2nd Team
• Fred Dudley - SPLASHBROTHERS
• Jeff Kenney - THE NEERS
• Derek Kaster - SUPERSONICS
• Seth Robinson - 20 or BETTER
• Zach Andrews – BALL SO HARD
As always, if you agree with what I‘ve said, give me a shout out. If you disagree, keep it to yourself, no one needs to know. Just kidding, feel free to call me out too - I’ll most likely not pay attention to it anyways.
