COMMERCE, MI REC: Hit Squad Keeps Their Promise
Hit Squad Crowned As Summer Champions
For the first time in our Rec League, a new team can call themselves champions. It's been a long time coming, but after a special dedication to a long time friend and family member they have pulled it off. Hit Squad is our new champions and will finally have their name on the banner hung in the gym.
At the beginning of the season they dedicated this season to their childhood friend Donald Smith who was battling cancer. Wanting to win it all for him we saw a completely different Hit Squad team this season. With Donald (DJ) in attendance for the championship game they did not want to fall short of their ultimate goal.
Coming into the game as the underdogs, no one thought they would be able to stop the high powered offense of One Under. Going into the half they found themselves down 12. In the second half they picked up their defensive pressure, guarding everyone 94 feet, forcing turnovers and easy baskets trimming the lead to two. A drive to the basket by Devante Pennyman who finished the layup and drew the foul, took the roof off the gym. After the made free throw, Hit Squad would not lose the lead again finishing off One Under by nailing all of their free throws down the stretch.
Co-Captain Devante Pennyman definitely saved his best game for last as he lead all scorers with 23 points on 8-12 shooting. But he didn't do it alone as three others scored in double digits (Jordan Jefferson-10, Ryan Matthews-13, Andre Tillman-18).
Congratulations to Hit Squad, our summer season champions!
